Suggested Criteria for Student Success in AP and Honors Courses

The College Board maintains equitable access as a guiding principle for their AP programs by giving all willing and academically prepared students the opportunity to participate in AP. It is their policy that students should have access to academically challenging course work before they enroll in AP courses, which will help prepare them for AP success.

Willis ISD echoes that policy, and has suggested criteria for success to support all students willing to partake in an Honors or AP course:

• Pass previous school year state assessment (STAAR or EOC)
• Positive teacher recommendation
• Read at grade-level or above
• Meet 90%+ attendance requirement
• Maintain 80-85% grade average in core content courses [High School 80%, Middle School 85% in core content courses]

Destination Imagination (DI) Overview

DI is a student-driven, cross-curricular, competitive, creative problem-solving program available on campuses to students in grades 3-12. Availability and number of teams per campus is based on volunteer staff member sponsorship as team manager, and team size is limited by the Destination Imagination organization to a max of 7 students per team.

Teams meet one to two days per week on campus with a team manager (staff member) as a volunteer group facilitator to work on both team building activities, team instant challenges, Improv theater, and skill-building, research/practice for competitions. As time gets closer to regional competition, teams often meet more frequently and for a longer duration.

We welcome parents as skills mentors or team volunteers, so if you have a passion for engineering, construction, theater, art, sewing, construction, power tool use, or any special skill and would like to help, please let your campuses DI Team Manager know ASAP.

The goal of the robotics program in Willis ISD:

Our goal is to develop a self-sustaining, student-led robotics program that is accessible to all students in Willis ISD from elementary through grade 12, who are willing to learn.

Students in the program will grow in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The students will experience principles of design and function through the process of building and programming robots. Students will work collaboratively in a safe environment while developing solutions to the new game or challenge every year.

All roboticists and volunteer coaches and mentors will represent Willis and what it means to be a Wildkat both on and off the field. We will build student capacity in the invaluable skills of problem-solving and critical thinking, all while having fun.

We looking forward to the continued expansion of Wildkat Robotiks throughout the district at all levels in the near future.
